What is Swing Dancing?
Swing Dancing generally refers to a group of dances that developed from the 1920's through to the 1950's with the "swing" and jazz music of the era. One of the most famous of them being the Lindy Hop.
Originating in Harlem in 1927, it got it's name from the famous Lindbergh flight across the atlantic, from New York to Paris.
Lindy Hop really is the mothership of all the swing dances. Deriving from the Charleston, it is a fusion of many dances including jazz , tap and many African American dances.
Swing Belfast mainly teach Lindy Hop, Charleston, East Coast Swing and West Coast Swing.
Most of our classes start with a Solo Jazz warm up. Over each 10 week term (Thursday night) we teach the famous Shim Sham.
This Jazz routine is done at many of our social nights and is known around the world.
HellZapoppin' is one of the most famous movie clips featuring Lindyhop. Released in 1941 by Universal Pictures it features a crazy fast and manic routine by Whitey's Lindy Hoppers. You really can't help be astounded by it.

In Swing dance competitions there are many catagories. This example is the "classic" devision.
Social dancing is the essence of Swing ! It's what gives most dancers, professionals and amateurs alike the greatest joy.
